Black Sunrise Political Ed Training for Crowd

Trump is on his way out of office, and it's finally time to look ahead to the future we're fighting for. 2021 is our time to start making the Green New Deal a reality. Biden won this election because our generation threw down, and now his time is ours. From the moment he steps into office, we need to be ready to demand that Biden take swift, bold action on climate. And if we do that, we could have some seriously big wins -- from transformative executive actions, to an Office of Climate Mobilization that can ensure we begin the decade of the Green New Deal in Biden's first 100 days. But he'll only do that if Sunrise and our allied movements make him. 

We're using this last month of 2020 to build our skills and share our strategy for launching a Green New Deal in 2021. In this training series, we will:

Get grounded in the brand new political moment we're in now that Trump is on his way out
Look at what history shows us about how movements can create big change even under divided government - from the New Deal to the Obama era
Map out our strategy to push Biden and launch a Green New Deal in 2021
Build the skills you'll need to help put that strategy into action
Build community with other Black Sunrisers

Fight For Our Lives!

We are in the midst of an unprecedented emergency with real human costs. The planet is on fire. People are dying. Instead of figuring out how to align with popular movement demands like a Green New Deal and Medicare for All — which reflect real needs of the masses — establishment Dems are blaming the left for their own losses.

That’s why we’re having an action at Chuck Schumer's office on Saturday 12/12 to defend & advance our agenda instead.

It’s time to put establishment Democrats on blast for their total failure to support the working class. Now is the time to FIGHT FOR OUR LIVES. This is Do or Die—and we're going to defend & advance our real solutions that have broad popular support.

Our coordinated actions will shift the national narrative and put the failure on Biden, Pelosi, and Schumer and the neoliberal bipartisan consensus that will consign us to climate catastrophe and working class misery, unless we organize the power we need to change course.

Our Demands:
— Immediate COVID-19 Crisis Relief (including $2,000 per month for all)
— A Green Stimulus (including investments in renewable Public Power)
— A Green Job Guarantee
— The PRO Act
— The Healthcare Emergency Guarantee Act

The NYC-DSA Immigrant Justice Working Group is holding its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Dec 9th via Zoom Call. RSVP to receive the link and join our call.

We’ll hear report-backs on the #FreeThemAll campaign, particularly around the Hudson County ICE Contract Renewal, and the Fund Excluded Workers & Tax the Rich campaigns, as well as a political education presentation, amongst other things.

Phonebank for Eviction Moratorium!

Join the BK Housing Working Group for a lunchtime phonebank to pressure Albany to reconvene before the end of the year to pass a comprehensive eviction moratorium. We'll be calling tenants using a nifty calling tool that allows us to patch them through to the offices of State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins and State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie.
No past experience necessary; the phonebank will open with a brief training on the calling tool and the script.

ABCs of Capitalism: Capitalism and the State

How can it be that in a society with enormous resources and wealth a thin layer at the top owns nearly everything, while billions upon billions struggle to survive? What role does the government and the state play in maintaining this system? How should socialists organize to win rights and dignity for workers?

In the ABCs of Capitalism, sociologist Vivek Chibber walks us through the basic concepts and questions of how our capitalist economic system works and reproduces itself over time. In pamphlet B, Dr. Chibber explains how and why it is that "When the poor have policy preferences that conflict with those of the rich, the chances that the policies of the poor are passed go down to around zero." We'll be thinking through questions like:
- Is the state a politically neutral entity?
- Are capitalism and democracy at odds?
- What are lobbyists? How is social policy made?
- How is the state 'structurally dependent' on capital and capitalists?

These discussions will be reading groups led by a facilitator and the pamphlets are about 30 pages each. They are meant to be at an introductory level but are open to all. And, whether you’re new to Left or still retain vivid memories of arguing with Michael Harrington, anyone who has mastered a subject will tell you that it’s always helpful to return to the basics. Level Up Your Game - Fundraising During the Holidays

Mass Call: Fundraising is organizing, and this call will train hub leaders on how to deeply connect with your communities to build people power and raise funds! These skills are crucial to building the grassroots strength we need to win a Green New Deal. Personal hub examples will ground us in both the successes and challenges and this work, and then coaching will be provided on how to make an ask, and how to plan a fundraising campaign. Attendees will leave with tools and strategies to launch successful hub fundraising drives -- See you there!
